Beginning our voyage in
historic St. Petersburg, eginning our voyage in
historic St. Petersburg,
we fly to the Siberian village "Norilsk" for our first preparations, before we
continue on to Servanaya Zemlia. As we proceed North out over the immense Arctic Ocean we
keep watch for Polar Bears and Walruses. You will realize the vast greatness of these icy
realms even before you set your foot on the ice-shelf itself at our "Ice Camp"
situated at approximately 89 degrees North -- 1 degree or 60 miles from the North Pole.
skis and pulling our load, we head North through dense, multi-year pack ice to the North
Pole, a worthy goal as our team is pushing through pressure ridges, crossing leads as
explorers before us. Early spring the weather will be at its best with temperatures
ranging from -10 F and above. Navigating the polar pack under the midnight sun, we are
enthralled by an ever-changing panorama of wind-polished ice, narrow channels of dark
green water and aquamarine pools.
Once at the Pole,
achieving our goal, we celebrate the victory with Russian Caviar and Champagne as we
contemplate the heroic struggles of early explorers who succeeded or failed to reach this
spot -- the place on earth where all meridians unite. From the Pole a helicopter and plane
will bring us back to the civilized world. This is truly an expedition of a lifetime.
